Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Lere Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State is a predominantly agrarian community with a diverse population. However, the region faces significant challenges in accessing employment opportunities due to geopolitical tensions that affect the labor market. Geopolitical factors, including ethnic conflicts, political instability, and the distribution of resources, have had a lasting impact on labor market access in Lere. These tensions often result in divisions that hinder economic growth and access to employment (Abdullahi & Abdullahi, 2023).
Lere LGA has a relatively young population, but employment opportunities remain limited due to political and economic barriers exacerbated by ethnic tensions. Geopolitical tensions, such as conflicts between ethnic groups over land and resources, exacerbate these issues, limiting the ability of individuals to access jobs and training opportunities (Olayiwola & Haruna, 2024). The study will examine how these geopolitical tensions influence the labor market in Lere and the broader implications for youth employment and poverty alleviation strategies (Musa & Suleiman, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Geopolitical tensions in Lere LGA have resulted in significant barriers to accessing the labor market, particularly for the youth population. These tensions, coupled with limited resources and infrastructure, restrict the ability of individuals to find gainful employment. This study aims to investigate the influence of geopolitical tensions on labor market access in Lere and propose strategies for improving employment opportunities in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it addresses the broader issue of how geopolitical factors, particularly ethnic conflicts, affect employment opportunities in Lere LGA. The findings will inform policymakers, local governments, and development organizations on how to mitigate the impact of geopolitical tensions on the labor market. It will also provide recommendations for improving access to employment and skills development programs, particularly for youth in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Lere LGA in Kaduna State, with an emphasis on labor market access in the context of geopolitical tensions. The limitations include challenges in accessing data due to the sensitivity of ethnic conflicts and the potential reluctance of local stakeholders to participate in the study.
